Reseting elevator fire recall

Building elevators are connected to building fire alarm systems, and they do recall when the fire alarm system has been activated.  This is designed to keep people from suffering from smoke inhalation, or burns when a fire condition occurs in a building.  Elevator shafts can act like a chimney in a fire, causing a high concentration of smoke in a constricted area increasing the risk of smoke inhalation danger.

If your elevators have recalled because the fire alarm system in your building was activated, you must first address the alarm in the fire system before you can reset your elevators to normal operation.  Click here to reset your fire alarm system.

After you have reset your fire alarm system follow these steps to reset your elevators, you may have to do this more than once if your building has multiple elevators, or elevator banks.

  • Locate the keys to your elevator.  If you can’t find these keys, then you will have to contact your elevator repair company and request additional keys.
  • Once you have located the keys you will need to go to the elevator lobby that has the firefighters operation on the elevator call switch. Normally the first floor lobby.
  • Insert the appropriate key into the lock on the elevator call panel.
  • Turn the key to the position labeled reset, and leave in this position for several seconds.
  • Turn the key back to the off position, being careful not to go past this position, because going past this position will reactivate the recall feature.
  • Remove the key and test the elevator for normal operation.

You may have to repeat these steps several times before you can get the elevators back to normal operation.  If these steps do not work, be sure you have reset the fire alarm to normal operation, clear of alarms.
